Why compounding for vet medications?
Veterinary medicine relies heavily on compounding pharmacies, as doses and dosage forms required for animals differ greatly from humans and therefore need specialized adjustments based on breed, weight, and indication.
For example, felines have a great vascular system in and on their ears making topical dosage forms ideal in certain instances such as hyperthyroidism. Compounding pharmacies also have the ability to manipulate an oral tablet and transform it into a topical cream or gel leading to improved efficacy and adherence. Compounding pharmacies are also able to add flavoring, i.e. chicken flavor, in order to make the medication more palatable for an animal. Another thing to consider is the dosage amount varies greatly between animals making compounding pharmacies vital for individualized dosing whether it’s a capsule, suspension or cream.
